![]() ![]() AOL announced the shutdown today, acknowledging that people now communicate in new ways online, so AIM is no longer needed. ![]() It’s a sad moment: AIM, AOL’s long-running instant messenger service that was core to many people’s first social experiences on the internet, will shut down once and for all on December 15th. “Instant messaging” became ubiquitous in 1997 with the launch of AIM (AOL Instant Messenger), which used its proprietary OSCAR instant messaging and TOC protocols to allow registered users to communicate in real time. What year did instant messaging become popular? While popular around the world, the service had little to no Chinese chatting or presence in China. In the late 90s, Pony Ma first encountered one of the internet’s earliest messaging apps, ICQ, created by an Israeli company way back in 1996. ICQ was created by Yair Goldfinger, Arik Vardi, Sefi Vigiser and Amnon Amir in 1996 (it’s not clear if all of those individuals are involved in KnockaTV) and its parent company was acquired by AOL for $408 million in 1998. ![]() The founders of instant messaging service ICQ are behind the company. #Icq chat 90s codeDuring the call, you and your friend can check a special code to make sure it matches. That means that no one, even ICQ New, can gain access to your conversations. ICQ New uses end-to-end encryption - your call is encrypted on your device and decrypted at your friend’s device. Originally developed by the Israeli company Mirabilis in 1996, the client was bought by AOL in 1998, and then by Mail.Ru Group (now VK) in 2010. The name ICQ derives from the English phrase “I Seek You”.
